My Holy Trinity: football, food and beer

The big game is just around the corner, and if you love football, food and beer as much as I do, then you’re probably already thinking about how to bring the holy trinity together on Superbowl Sunday.  Well lucky for me, my team made it through (GO PATS!), so now all I have to worry about is what to eat and drink.

I started seriously watching football with my husband about 5 years ago.  It began with a major crush on Tom Brady, and turned into a really great way to spend a lazy Sunday drinking beer on the couch eating nachos.  It’s gotten to the point where we sort of dread the end of the season, because it means we’ll have to be productive on Sundays.  So with one last hurrah this weekend I plan to send the NFL season out with a bang.

First, what to drink?  I have nothing against ‘cheap’ beer (not that any beer in Canada is actually cheap). I drank my fair share of PBR in college, but now that I’m a proper grown-up, I prefer to spend my hard earned cash on the finer things in life.  To me the perfect football watching brew is Mirror Pond Pale Ale, from Deschutes Brewery in Bend, Oregon. Thankfully I can finally get it in Vancouver.  It’s a hoppy delicious treat, that at $16 a 6 pack might seem outrageous to the average joe, but is well worth it to me.  Be warned, I might not share.

Next, the menu!  Usually it’s just the two of us, since none of our friends take the game seriously enough to get an invite so I’m not feeding an army.  Hot wings are a must, 7 layer dip is also necessary, but what about the star of the show?  Every great team has a winning quarterback right!  Well lately I’ve been craving jalapeno poppers; they keep tempting me with ridiculously tiny samples at Costco, but since I can’t justify buying an American family sized box this weekend I think I’m going to attempt to make my own jalapeno poppers!   I’ll report back on how they turn out, but I have high hopes!  After all, I take my food just as seriously as I take the game!

So let’s all hope for a Patriots victory, or at least a great football game!  Whether you’re tailgating, hanging with your buds, or watching on your own, make sure to eat something tasty!

And Tom Brady…I ♥ you
